Why McGregor is as notorious for his fights as his fits

Conor McGregor might have announced his retirement but his wardrobe is not going to be hanging up its gloves any time soon. The Notorious has a knack for menswear which is as bombastic as his pre-fight trash talk.

Say what you like about McGregor, but there’s getting around the fact that he dresses like you hope the biggest fighter on the planet would.

From Gucci tracksuits, to his own suiting line with the tailor David August, to a regular old tracksuit in the gym, the Irishman’s fits are as big as his hits.

It takes a certain sort of person to be able to wear a suit with the words F**k You sewn into the chalk stripe, but McGregor is the man to do it. His personality is big enough that he’s not swallowed whole by even the most outlandish of ensembles.

There’s also an eye for a ‘moment’ here as well. He’s not simply thrown money at the problem—although granted, that has certainly helped— instead, McGregor has an eye for theatrical dressing, for creating statements. He understands that hype isn’t just about what you say it’s about how you look when you’re doing it.

Take the white mink fur coat that he wore to the UFC 205 press conference (see picture 3). The whole look was a tribute to the great Joe Frazier, who purchased a similar coat before fighting Ali, and wore it with a red turtleneck near identical to McGregor’s.

And look, if a double UFC champion and one half of the biggest pay per view boxing event of all time ($700m in revenue for his fight with Floyd Mayweather) can’t wear a red Versace dressing gown then what are we even doing here?
