This is your first look at a new collaboration between Tommy Hilfiger and AAPE by A Bathing Ape. Dropping on July 11 2020, the capsule collection is a result of the coming together of the two brands that will offer polo shirts, denim jackets, T-shirts, footwear and accessories.
Both Tommy and A Bathing Ape have a strong denim and streetwear pedigree, and crossover between their two sub-brands has resulted in a collection that will have those nostalgic for the 90s, queueing around the block.
Cast your mind back (or imagine it if you weren’t yet born) to a time when The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was on its first TV run. Michael Jordan had made the crossover into cinema with Bugs Bunny in Space Jam, and Montell Jordan was explaining that “This is How we do it”.
Fits were big, denim was loose and trainers were chunky. It’s this style, 90s Hip-hop influenced denim, rather than say grunge, that the Tommy Jeans X Aape collection references.
The denim is dark but heavily washed, and the collection’s block colour T-shirts bear red white and blue logos.
The sneakers meanwhile are big, bold and technical and again make use of a red, and blue colour scheme. The design brings to mind long-forgotten but iconic 90s sneakers from Jordache and all the better for it.
The stand-out pieces for us though are the denim jacket with the Tommy X AAPE logo on the back and the oversized, red polio shirt, again bearing the logo on the rear.
Just be prepared for a longer body than you might be used to, because we mean it literally when we say: 90s silhouettes go deep.
