Notorious for its rating secrecy, the streaming platform has revealed its 10 most popular original movies for the first time ever

If, like most of us, you’ve been steadily making your way through every category available on Netflix, it’s likely you will have encountered some serious hits and misses. Whereas Hollywood may have formulated the secret to success when it comes to a movie worthy of an Oscar nomination, you can never be too sure with Netflix. Whether it’s an Adam Sandler comedy that’s widely panned by critics, or a plot that goes careening from reality faster than Thelma and Louise, what doesn’t necessarily get the nods from the Academy can still get fans raving on Twitter.

If you’re someone who likes to stay on trend, the “Trending Now” row will likely serve as your guiding light. It’s something most of us who aren’t in the mood for endless scrolling opt for, particularly as Netflix is notoriously cagey about revealing specifics about its content. From ratings to subscriber numbers, despite being one of the most prolific streaming platforms in the world, Netflix continues to safe-guard its information. It’s why the announcement of the 10 most popular original movies on the platform has been received with great excitement. For the first time ever, Netflix is giving us all a look into one of the most important metrics: how well its original content is performing.

As more streaming services continue to pop up, making it increasingly difficult for users to abstain from signing up to all of them and copping a pretty hefty bill, original content has become a deciding factor. This is content that is exclusive to that platform, which makes it incredibly significant as it’s ultimately what sets Netflix apart from say, Disney or Hulu. Now, Netflix is giving us a look at just how popular its original content is.

As the line-up suggests, the action/thriller is a huge boost for Netflix. As Bloomberg suggests, the top films in the list all share a common thread: an action/thriller genre, and a big-name star. In this instance, the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Sandra Bullock, Mark Wahlberg and Ryan Reynolds all saw their films sky-rocket on Netflix.

Here are Netflix’s 10 most popular original movies ranked by total audience in the first four weeks of the movie’s debut on the streaming service.

1. Extraction: 99 million

Chris Hemsworth stars as a black-market mercenary who has nothing to lose. When he's hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord, adventure unfolds. You can expect high-adrenaline fight sequences, chases, and a whole lot of heart from the Aussie golden child, Hemsworth himself.

2. Bird Box: 89 million

Never has the blindfold been such a symbol of pop culture fascination since the release of 50 Shades of Grey. Sandra Bullock stunned in this film about a mysterious force that decimates the populaton. The real kicker? If you see it, you die.

3. Spenser Confidential: 85 million

Mark Wahlberg continues to find success in films that see the actor fight the criminal underworld. In this original from Netflix, the former police detective returns to Boston to unravel a twisted murder conspiracy. Post Malone also stars in the flick.

4. 6 Underground: 83 million

While known for his hilarity, Ryan Reynolds is also becoming quite the action star. This film follows six individuals around the globe, each the very best at what they do. But rather than be chosen simply for their skill alone, they all share the desire to delete their pasts to change the future.

5. Murder Mystery: 73 million

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston are something of an unlikely couple, but their hilarity and chemistry make for great entertainment in this hilarious murder mystery. A classic who-dunnit takes place during a Europe vacation and puts the couple in the centre of chaos.

6. The Irishman: 64.2 million

Bringing together the biggest names in Hollywood, the film tells the story of Jimmy Hoffa, a powerful Teamster tied to organised crime.

7. Triple Frontier: 63 million

With an all-star cast including the likes of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac and Charlie Hunnam, Triple Frontier sees former Special Forces operatives reunite to plan a heist in a multi-border zone of South America.

8. The Wrong Missy: 59 million

David Spade returns to the screen for this film which sees disaster strike when a man invites his dream girl to an island resort, only to find out that a previous blind date shows up instead.

9. The Platform: 56.2 million

This haunting film takes place in a rather dystopian future where prisoners house in vertical cells must watch as inmates in the upper cells are fed while those below starve.

10. The Perfect Date: 48 million

Noah Centineo continues to lend his good looks to Netflix, starring in this rom-com. Centineo plays Brooks Rattigan, a high school student who creates an app to offer his services as a fake date to make money for college. But the business plan is derailed hen Rattigan develops feelings for someone.
