Saudi Animation Studio Myrkott Will Bring New Work To Netflix
Netflix’s investment in the Middle East continues, with the announcement of a five-year partnership with Saudi studio Myrkott.
The Saudi Arabian animation studio has agreed to a deal which will give Netflix rights to new series of Masameer, as well as Masameer: The Movie, plus new adult animations work.
Animation is a growing category for Netflix, with both niche and broad appeal. As with their approach to feature films, the platform allows space for both the commercial and avant garde. Big, brash series like Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman and South Park rub shoulders on Netflix with gentler, more philosophical work like The Midnight Gospel and the Studio Ghibli catalogue.
Masameer sits perfectly in this mix. Its launch in 2011 saw it heaped with praise for its unique take on Saudi issues and while Masameer: The Movie was less successful, we are excited about new work from Myrkott.
While Netflix already hosts Masameer: The Movie, Masameer will be available to stream shortly. In the meantime, Netflix and Myrkott will be working on new material.
“Myrkott is at the forefront of creative storytelling and animation in the region,” said Nuha El Tayeb, Director, Content Acquisitions, MENAT at Netflix.
“We are continually investing in authentic stories from Saudi Arabia to share their stories across the Arab world and globally. We want to give our members access to great stories that can travel far and wide,”
Abdulaziz Almuzaini Myrkott CEO and Co-founder, added, “We at Myrkott think about this partnership beyond the production aspects, by working with Netflix we inspire Saudi and Arab talents to dream big and support an ecosystem that recognizes equal opportunity, talent and creativity, these are the values that fueled Myrkott in its pursuit of excellence throughout the years.”
