As His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, celebrates his 70th birthday today, why not celebrate it by visiting a piece of ground-breaking art at the heart of Dubai?
An experiential art installation entitled Vision | Mission it was created by the Dubai-based architecture and interior design studio Kart Group as a tribute to the leader (because making something for a person’s birthday is a gift that shows the most love, right?)
The installation is a mise en abyme (a technique of placing a copy of an image within itself) of two noble leaders: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his son His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, presented back to back. The piece invites visitors to reflect on the culture of leadership across generations.
“The sculpture pays homage to the Dubai’s leadership and cultural values through the prism of two generations,” says Mustafa Khamash, CEO and founder of Kart Group, and the creative talent behind Vision | Mission. “Sheikh Mohammed and his son Sheikh Hamdan, are symbolically represented in this 3D multidimensional sculpture, with a fusion of layers that merge their portraits into one.”
The perfect parallel of gradient layers was accomplished by playing with pixel and vectors, 2D and 3D softwares, simplifying the contours yet modelling maximum details to create an intriguing, realistic portrait of two leaders.
Unveiled during Dubai Design Week 2018, Vision | Mission has been appreciated for its innovative, technology-led approach to portraiture and public art.
