Marvel at the new Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw trailer. How its CGI vehicles glide weightlessly around in the manner of a PlayStation 2 video game. How its characters all seem plucked from a painfully earnest, macho '90s movie. How Idris Elba is thrown through a bus, dusts himself off, and finds the mental wherewithal to make a quip. In the Fast and Furious universe, the laws of science are just rules that get in the way of fun, so let's ignore them altogether.
We already know how this movie, generally speaking, is going to pan out. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will trade increasingly elaborate barbs/games of one-upmanship, while also occasionally uniting against their common enemy: Elba's genetically-enhanced "Black Superman" (his words). Hobbs will also flirt with Deckard's sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) and hopefully his "mum" (a returning Helen Mirren!), too. There is little in the way of new information in this final trailer before the film gets its August 2 release. We already know Johnson's real-life cousin and current WWE superstar Roman Reigns will make an appearance. We see him performing an aptly-named Samoan drop, as well as his signature finisher, the spear.
All this is to say, I do not mind that this trailer basically takes me step-by-step through every major set piece in the film. I'm not going into Hobbs & Shaw to be dazzled by narrative. I'm going in to watch these delightful man-children drive cars as if they're spaceships and insult each other. I will love every minute of it... and so will you.
