Despite coronavirus cutting into the financial side of global sport, its top stars still took home billions

As Forbes reports, 2020 will mark the first time in four years where the earning potential of the world's highest-paid athletes has fallen, largely in part to the economic impacts the coronavirus has had on global sport. Even so, their earning potential is still pretty stunning, with the 100 highest-earning athletes in the world earning a combined $3.9 billion USD in the last year.

The money magazine, which has turned its yearly highest-paid lists into bona fide events over the last few years, has finally dropped its final list of the 100 highest-paid athletes in the world this year, shortly after naming Floyd Mayweather Jr as the highest-paid sportsperson of the decade late last year. Forbes also teased one of the list's major revelations this week, reporting that Naomi Osaka's 2019-20 earnings were the most lucrative ever for a female athlete in a single year, trumping the likes of Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams.

Even so, the upper echelons of the list are still very much male dominated, with the usual suspects of Football, Tennis, NBA and NFL all occupying the top spots. For the first time, it was Roger Federer who ascended to the top of the list, topping the earnings of last year's winner Lionel Messi and his footballing counterparts Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Tiger Woods, who was once a regular feature at the very top of Forbes' list, came in at eighth to add another feather to the cap of his career revival, while NFL Quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Kirk Cousins, both of whom are on bumper contracts, made the list for the first time.

The list also reflects a relatively quiet period in big-money fight sports like Boxing and MMA. Tyson Fury, Conor McGregor, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder all failed to crack the top 10, as did Canelo Alvarez, despite having one of the most lucrative contracts in world sport.

Here are the 10 highest-earning athletes for 2019-2020, according to Forbes.
