Why Call Me By Your Name Is Still The Film To Watch For Summer Style Tips
Summer dressing can seem a bit daunting. With the need to cater our style towards increasing temperatures (annoyingly subject to change – cheers, Britain), it’s difficult to assess what kind – and quantity – of layers you’ll need for your average day out (or not out? Will we still be in lockdown come July? So. Much. Uncertainty).
The one thing we can tell you, however, is how to safely transition your wardrobe into the season (even if you will be spending it at home). A simple ensemble of short shorts and baggy shirts should be your go-to – ideally, in neutral hues. For a safe bet, you also want to stay clear of bold prints; stick to stripes, as they’re elegant.
The rule in a nutshell? Less is more. That’s the approach Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet take in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 feature film Call Me By Your Name, and, three years on, the style moves from their leading characters still work wonders.
We’ll take any excuse to talk about this film (those who haven’t seen, add it to your weekend watch list), so, herewith, five easy fashion rules from Elio and Oliver...
1. Double denim is an easy win
Why: Summer is the season to go a bit bolder with your style, so the first tip to take from Call Me By Your Name? Double denim. Chalamet’s entry as Elio into the film confirms that matching your jeans with your jacket is far from a faux pas; in fact, if you layer a pastel shirt beneath (leaving it untucked and slightly unbuttoned), it’s actually the best signifier for casual nonchalance. Big yes.
2. Earthy hues ensure elegance
Why: What is it that makes Oliver (Hammer) so charming? His doctoral interests play a part, of course, but from a fashion perspective, he rakes in those style points by wearing very simple – and, for the most part, earthy-toned – outfits. Just look at this one for proof: preppy white socks, straight-cut beige shorts and a slightly oversized mint green shirt. Easy elegance: the ultimate point of call for summer.
3. The only pattern for summer? Stripes
Why: We’re all for floral clothing (especially when sourced from Dries Van Noten), but as a style cue for summer, it’s a bit obvious. The more subtle print to embrace? Stripes, worn perfectly by Elio in Call Me By Your Name. His favoured way to wear them? Ideally, in a red and navy colourway (a bit different to the obvious Breton design) and, adhering to the summer temperature, through a sleeveless structure. The finishing touch? Dainty silver jewellery, of course.
3. You need some short shorts
Why: In case you haven’t caught up with the standout Spring/Summer 2020 trends, here’s an easy one for you: short shorts. When we say short, we mean as short as your boxers and very floaty, with one main purpose as a protective layer under an oversized Oxford shirt. Basically, it’s this look worn by Oliver, which we strongly advise you emulate during the summer season. Who would have thought nonchalance could provide such a statement?
5. A band T-shirt goes a long way
Why: The main reason we’re still obsessed with the style in this film? Everything Oliver and Elio wear slots into the “essential” category. One final case in point: Elio’s brilliant Talking Heads T-shirt, which swiftly speaks of excellent taste in fashion and music at once. Our only disclaimer if you follow this move: just make sure you’re actually into the band you’re wearing (total style fail if you can’t belt out your favourite – and preferably niche – song).
