Your First Look At The Saw Franchise Reboot Starring Chris Rock
Horror comedy crossovers are ten-a-penny, and exist all along the movie spectrum. We've had the sheer satirical lunacy of the Scary Movie franchise, and we've had the subtle humorous nuance that Jordan Peele managed to infuse in films like Us and Get Out. Our point is by now, when it comes to horror, very little shocks us.
But when it was revealed that Chris Rock is a massive fan of the Saw movies - so much so that he's decided to reboot it almost entirely himself, even the hardiest horror fan raised something of a skeptical eyebrow. Reports from Hollywood first emerged in 2019 that Rock has penned an entirely new adaptation of Jigsaw's story: one that will undoubtedly be maniacally funny and twisted in Rock's unique way.
“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” said Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake.
“Saw is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all-time, and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea, and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”
Now, we've got your first look into the new reboot for the franchise. Titled Spiral: From the Book of Saw, the trailer shows Rock's character driving alongside a fellow detective. The pair are soon called in when an officer is reported to have been shot down. When the crime scenes are revealed, Rock's character attempts to solve the puzzles in order to save his own life, along with the other police officers involved.
The aforementioned Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have signed up to produce the film while Rock will serve as EP alongside the original creators of Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannel. Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg will bring the story to the paper as writers. Darren Lynn Bousman, who manned the director's chair on Saw movies II through IV, will return to direct the reboot.
Rock himself said" “I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
“Chris wants to put his own spin on the Saw franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours," said longtime series producers Mark Burg and Oren Koule.
"This new Saw is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started.”
Now, the reboot has received its first major lead, and they've come up with some pretty special talent to bring the film a certain charm (and no doubt a whole lot of profanity): Samuel L. Jackson. "We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt,” Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.
Right now, the film is set for an October 2020 release date.
