Not To Be Outdone, Pablo Escobar’s Brother Just Launched A Foldable Phone
Samsung just revealed the Galaxy Fold, the smartphone that delivers a seamless multi-app experience and foldable Infinity Flex Display that has since been deemed revolutionary – disrupting the smartphone industry like never before, sending Apple and other competitors scrambling to produce their own. But while Apple and Huawei work to even get their patents approved, one man has not only designed a foldable phone, but actually has it available for sale.
Not to be outdone by the more established tech companies, Pablo Escobar’s brother is claiming space on the foldable phone map. Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria has released his own device, aptly titled the ‘Escobar Fold 1’. And unlike the Samsung Fold which might set you back a grand or so, this phone will only set you back $500.
Given that the late Colombian drug kingpin was the most notorious not only in Colombia but also around the world, Roberto is capitalising on a name that still garners considerable attention. Even following the numerous documentaries, news stories and Netflix specials, the life of extravagance and assassinations that Escobar pursued remains of interest, with tourists still flocking to destinations in Escobar’s home country just to get a taste of life in those times. And now, at least potentially, they might be flocking to get a device attached to the family name (however questionable this fascination with Escobar may be).
According to reports, Roberto’s ‘Escobar Fold 1’ is compatible with “all networks” worldwide and boasts a 7.8-inch AMOLED FHD Plus screen when folded. It runs Android 9.0 (Pie), is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Series chipset, and has dual 16- and 20-megapixel cameras.
On the website advertising the device, promotional videos feature a number of scantily clad women showing off the Escobar Fold 1. Sure, the camera tends to linger on the women longer than the phone itself, but there is a shot of the phone’s screen in action…which also happens to have the mug of Pablo Escobar plastered on it as the wallpaper.
In an interview with CNET, Escobar Inc. CEO Olof Gustafsson described the device as one which is “completely revolutionary,” adding that “what Mr. Escobar has done is to cut out all retailers and wholesalers, giving that financial benefit to the consumer.”
And while the Samsung Galaxy Fold is clearly getting all the hype, Roberto seems determined to steal some of that away from the tech company, with the specs of the Escobar Fold 1 being described as far superior to that of Apple or Samsung devices.
“This industry that used to be full of innovation has now become full of companies looking to make profit. It is not for nothing that Apple is the most profitable company in the world, when a computer stand costs more than an iPhone. Long story short, this is absurd, and Mr. Escobar is changing that now,” said Gustafsson.
Meanwhile, Roberto put to bed any insecurities potential buyers might have when it comes to the foldable phone. Speaking to Digital Trends, he said that his model wouldn’t suffer the same fate as some of the Samsung Galaxy Fold devices, saying that it “cannot break” due to the screen being made of “a special type of plastic.”
Shots fired to Samsung. Meanwhile, if you care to take a chance on Roberto and his new foldable design (which may or may not come complete with Escobar’s mug shot) – go for it.
