Whether consoling yourself over Game of Thrones by styling your hair after Jon Snow, or going for a touch of Timothée Chalamet’s infinite stardom, there’s never been a better time to rock your unruly hair

From bowl cuts to blowouts, Timothée Chalamet’s hair evolution has drawn almost as much attention to the 23-year-old as his impressive on-screen performances and fashion-forward red carpet fits. Then there’s the full head of hair on Kit Harington – or rather more specifically, Jon Snow – that we’ve  admired on Game of Thrones for nearly a decade.

At mid-length, both Chalamet and Harington’s styles – slightly different due to their specific hair types – are perfect chops to consider, following the massive splash that longer, wavier and curlier hair made on the recent FW19 runways. With over 20 years of experience, we asked hairstylist Luay Al Tinawi of Jazz Lounge Spa in Dubai to guide you through the method needed to style your mane and imitate two of Hollywood’s most glorious grooming kings.

King of Curls

Who does it work for?
“It definitely works best for someone who has full, thick hair with a natural wave or curl,” says Al Tinawi. Then of course, guys who have the patience to grow out their hair, as well as the dedication to style it daily.

How do you style it?
Al Tinawi suggests using a mousse, as it creates defined frizz-less waves, but cautions that too much of it may lead to unwanted stiffened curls. Alternatively, a product like Schwarzkopf Osis+ Curl Honey curl cream provides great definition without hair looking overly greasy.
“Any curl-defining product you use needs to be applied to wet hair and scrunched upwards towards your roots,” explains Al Tinawi. Pro tip: “If you brush out your hair, it will get frizzy and won’t lock in the shape.” Brushes away, gentlemen.

What maintenance is involved?
“Longer hair requires a little more care.” Kerastase’s Fusio-Dose treatments, tailored to individual hair needs, can be done in-salon. “It’s applied after washing, left on for 10-15 minutes and then rinsed off,” explains Al Tinawi. “It smooths, repairs split ends and instantly results in healthier, shinier-looking hair.”

Does this style work on super straight hair?
“There are permanent curling techniques for straight hair, using treatments like Dulcia Advanced by L’Oréal Professionnel. These can last about three to six months,” says Al Tinawi. But in order for this style to look natural and modern, it’s best to head to a trusted hairstylist.

The Wave Forward

Who does it work for?
This is where genetics come into play. “It’s great for straight to wavy hair types,” says Al Tinawi. “It would be difficult to get this look on someone with super curly or frizzy hair. This hairstyle also needs a longer layered, choppy cut.”

How do you style it?
Al Tinawi suggests letting hair dry naturally, so avoid brushing out your hair with a blow dryer. “Opt for a styling product, such as Schwarzkopf Osis+ Thrill Texture Fibre Gum, to create a messy style, like the bedhead look.”

What maintenance is involved?
“Adding a good conditioner to your grooming routine will help maintain healthy ends and smoother locks. The right one depends on your hair type."
