When your usual products won't cut it, it's time to bring in reinforcements.

Humidity throws even the most scrupulous grooming routine off-kilter – suddenly your go-to collection of products just don’t measure up. If breakouts, dry skin, sweat and frizz have blighted your summer, it’s time to apply these rules (and products) to your daily life.

1. Invest in the right sunscreen
We all know that we should slather ourselves in sunscreen every time we go outside, but the mixture of oily sunscreen and humidity can wreak havoc with your pores. Switch to a lighter sun protection that's specifically designed for the face – make sure it has a broad spectrum SPF and antioxidants to fight environmental damage.

2. Don’t neglect your lips
When humidity levels are high we often spend long periods of time in air conditioned buildings. This can lead to dry, sore skin and your lips are often the first to suffer. Jack Black’s SPF 25 Intense Therapy Lip Balm is a great all-rounder. Not only is it super moisturising, but it protects well against windburn and harsh conditions – so whatever the climate, keep this in your pocket.

3. Cleanse your face with extra care
It feels as though your skin has an extra layer of grime when it’s humid. Increased sebum leads to oily skin, and this warm, damp surface is the perfect host for bacteria – yes, it’s as disgusting as it sounds. To combat breakouts, cleanse your face both morning and night – if you can manage a double cleanse in the evening, that’s even better. Try a natural product that isn’t too harsh because (annoyingly) over-cleansing can make your skin just as angry.

4. Keep the sweat at bay
Humidity equals sweat, and even the most well-groomed can struggle to stay fresh all day. Opt for a stick deodorant without aluminium so that you can safely (and discreetly) top up throughout the day. Floris London has a light-weight stick that’s gentle on your skin and doesn’t have an overpowering smell.

5. Fight the frizz
The way moisture in the air affects your hair depends on your hair type. Curly locks are likely to go frizzy, thin hair often goes limp, and thick hair can look greasy. Those with shorter hairstyles are lucky, because it’s unlikely that you’ll notice too much change. If it’s on the longer side, you’ll need to invest some extra time for TLC. Aveda does a great oil-based pomade that repels moisture, keeping a whole spectrum of hair related emergencies at bay.
