Kit Harington shows you how to wear an ‘air tie’ at the Emmys
This year’s GQ Men of The Year Awards will take place on 7 October at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The dress code for the awards is No Rules Evening Wear and at last night’s Emmy Awards, GQ’s February cover star Kit Harington delivered an expert demonstration of exactly how to do it.
Dressed in what looks at first like a plain black Givenchy tuxedo and crisp white shirt, on closer inspection, you can see that the former King in the North is wearing something more considered than that.
Let’s look at the jacket first. A one-button, shawl collar dinner jacket, it’s made to feel more relaxed with patch instead of jet pockets. But the real detail here is the jacket’s satin shawl collar that is cut and folded in such a way as to give the impression of a peaked lapel. Givenchy call it a Duchess collar. It’s not something we’ve seen before but it works well and crucially, lets Harington’s lack of neckwear do the talking.
Tradition dictates you wear a bow tie to a ceremony with an eveningwear dress code but this is a brave new world we’re living in and Kit is here to show you that you don’t always need a dickie bow, or even a regular tie, to look like royalty. Instead, you can go for the ‘air tie’.
GQ’s Style Editor Rusty Buekes thinks Kit looks the part: “This is a great way to dress for the code without looking like you’ve tried too hard. The lack of tie might seem strange but once you’re over the feeling that you’ve forgotten something, you’ll look smart without being generic. Full marks Kit Harrington.”
What you do need, however, is a shirt with an appropriate collar. This white evening shirt has a sharp point collar, the lapels of which are slightly longer than average. They provide enough detail to fill the empty space. And yes, you do need to keep it buttoned up all night.
Last but by no means least, Harington’s Cuban heeled boots aren’t traditional but they fit the line of the suit perfectly. And if they offer an extra inch in height, who are we to say no? He might not have picked up an Emmy but he's defintiely beaten the dress code.
