The city of London will, for at least the next decade or two, live in the glow of the Olympic legacy it created for itself back in 2012. It was an amazing Olympics made even better by the historic performance of Team GB, and set the stage for a new era in British athletics that has seen the country really establish itself as the third major player alongside the US and China.
Even 7 years on from the events at London's Olympic park, the buzz is still strong around the British athletic community. A strong showing at Rio 2016 galvanised the sport in the UK, and it's inspiring a new age of investment and creativity within the sport.
Take, for instance, Nike London, who have made a name for themselves tapping into the unique spirit of England's capital city by honoring both its greatest athletes and its unique sporting culture. This extends to athletics, and now they've enlisted Virgil Abloh's Off-White, a frequent collaborator, to come up with an entirely new concept: a music-inspired, fashion-inspired, design-inspired sports day.
Organised in conjuntion with Creative Studio + Record Label Bone Soda, the NIKE “TRACK & FIELD” C/O VIRGIL ABLOH™ ©2019 event will be, as BONE SODA put it, "Sports Day meets Takeshi’s Castle! 12 teams taking part in a game show like London's never seen before. The arena set to play host will be adorned with all manner of unique games designed to test the competitors' athletic skills, from a running track where people have to open actual doors to progress, to what looks like a giant game of Kerplunk!
It seems as if 12 teams representing different London boroughs will compete for glory in the day, while those in the crowd at the secret location will be treated to DJ sets, live PAs, food and drinks. If you're in the area and feel like attending, you can sign up at Nike's website.
