Prada For Adidas Is Coming: Everything We Know About The New Collaboration
After yesterday, when Adidas teased a collaboration with Prada on social media with an image of two Adidas shoeboxes slipped into Prada’s embossed shopping bag, the Italian luxury house and Europe’s largest sportswear manufacturer have today offered more details about the project, including its scope and release dates for the first “iteration.” As Prada has resisted the collaboration fever that has hit other luxury brands, the Adidas partnership marks a historic moment for both brands.
While no further images have been offered, the release states that the collaboration will rely on the “rich legacies of both to re-engineer timeless icons,” meaning we’ll likely see the signatures of both brands—Prada’s interest in the ugly or overlooked, plus vernacular shapes and garments that work almost like pictograms subverted into luxury fashion; Adidas’s almost midcentury modern, rounded silhouette and three-stripe motif—merged into one. Prada has long been an industry leader in the fusion of technical clothing and luxury, with their Linea Rossa line, launched in 1997, a precedent for the kind of athletic-inspired apparel that would become the European runway standard two decades later. (They shuttered the line in the late 2000s and relaunched it in 2018.) It’s a brand that loves to undermine what we don’t think we want to see and make us want it. Adidas, of course, has made its mark in the world of high fashion with Kanye West’s Yeezy, as well as via former Celine designer Phoebe Philo’s adoration for the Stan Smith, which set off a street-style craze for the shoe in the mid-2000s.
The release states that the first delivery of the collaboration will be two Prada for Adidas shoes “that draw on the rich patrimony and iconography of both labels,” and will be available in December 2019. The shoes will be manufactured by Prada in their Italian factory. The project is referred to as “a new collaborative journey,” meaning much more is likely to come from the partnership.
