While the fashion industry continues to debate the relevance of dedicated menswear shows, designers are looking ahead and continuing to produce superb collections that are anything but dated.

This is certainly the case with Qasimi, launched by Sharjah-born Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, who presented his spring/summer 2020 show at London Fashion Week Men’s.

The Central Saint Martins graduate has impressed with his Middle Eastern-inspired style for over a decade now, and this season, Qasimi’s wanderer walked a runway made of grounded coffee (no, literally) towards a utopian future. “I wanted something poetic that evokes the senses,” says Qasimi. “It has the right texture and colour, and smells good.”

And the designer delivered, with a range of pieces in a sun-bleached colour palette – yellow, purple, mint – evoking the desired mood of lightness and positivity. But sticking true to form, also presented were tonal pieces in beige, black, white, and grey, underpinning Qasimi’s military-style clothing that we’ve come to know and love.

Another specialty is the tailoring – in case you needed a refresher that the designer has a background in architecture, though the way his clothes fall on the body, you’re bound to remember. We’re already eyeing that all-white suit rocked with a bare chest, as well as the selection of leather fits.

Standout pieces included the silk jelabas, knits – including a vest – and a sheer ripstop tracksuit in pale pink.

These are clothes – as the brand’s philosophy dictates – to be lived in, and we sure see ourselves doing that. Even with the unsettling undertone, it just means Qasimi has something to say. And we’re listening.
