The Hawai singer and VMA winner has turned his hand to design

The neon yellow suit which Maluma wore to this year’s MTV VMA’s is proof that he is not  afraid to take risks. On the back of a lesser mortal, this suit and matching shirt could have looked ridiculous. A blindingly bright flash of neon yellow, bordering on radioactive green, if he wasn’t careful, he could have ended up looking like a highlighter pen.

But Maluma is not like you or me. When he walked on set for his GQ Middle East cover shoot back in January, he was as adventurous with his outfit choices as our fashion editor had ever seen a cover star.

Maluma Is Going Into Orbit

Then again, when you look like Maluma, a Colombian musical god, with more Instagram followers than Harry Styles (53 million to Styles’ paltry 30 million) you can wear pretty much whatever you want.

And in this case that is actually what he did, because the aforementioned look was designed by Maluma himself.

The star worked with Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director, to design the neon look, which will now be featured in the brand’s SS2021 show next Paris Fashion Week.

Maluma made the announcement via Instagram, thanking Rousteing and Balmain for “helping me design my vision for the VMAs.”

Maluma of course, made the right choice because he picked up an award on the night for Best Latin video.

He was also joined by another notable neon wearer. Machine Gun Kelly wore a fuschia pink suit and sleeveless turtle neck.

The future of menswear, it seems, is bright.
