This New Reebok x Pyer Moss Sneaker Is Here From the Future
Reebok released its first collaboration with Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss in 2018, but the path-breaking designer has wasted no time in making his mark on the long-running sneaker brand. Earlier this year, the sneaker branded named Jean-Raymond as its artistic director, which means he’ll create special, limited-edition projects in collaboration with other designers and celebrities. Now, the designer’s latest handiwork – in the form of the colorful and head-turning Reebok Experiment 4 Fury Trail – is set to drop this weekend.
The silhouette shares a touch of DNA with wildcard style from Reebok, the InstaPump Fury. But Jean-Raymond has outfitted his sneaker with several mountaineering motifs: a rubberized leather mudguard, an integrated lacing system, and a jagged trail outsole for added traction and durability. The Experiment 4 Fury Trail has plenty more good genes, too: there's a touch of Rick Owens and Raf Simons to the proceedings. And if you're drawing comparisons to those guys, you're doing it right. But Pyer Moss and Reebok are making their own sneaker, to be clear. The Experiment 4 Fury Trail is a unique take on the beast-sneaker: futuristic and hyper-utilitarian with a high-fashion bent. Like many other red-hot sneakers of the moment, it blends modern sensibility with archival athletic style. Unlike many others, the showiness feels precisely calibrated and less happenstance.
This isn’t exactly new ground for Reebok; the brand has long collaborated with Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia on over-the-top kicks. But those collaborations, like most of Vetements’ products, veered into trolling, often covered in emojis or faux-dirt. I don’t get the sense that Jean-Raymond is here to create sneakers that will be transformed into memes, but rather to create something wearable and weird at the same time. And when it comes to a 2019 sneaker, stylish and strange is a winning combo.
