Here's a medium-temperature take for you: white sneakers can—and should—be worn year-round. The minimalist kicks have a way of toning down serious fall staples like statement topcoats and fuzzy sweaters. Think of the shoe as a way to elevate your most quintessential autumn look. The downside, of course, is that not every white sneaker can hold up to icy chills and wet weather. Luckily, Adidas is giving one of their beloved classics—the looks-good-with-everything Stan Smith—an upgrade that will let you wear the iconic white sneaker well into the cold.
The Three Stripes kept it simple and didn’t change the iconic design of the low-top tennis sneaker. All of the hallmarks that you know and love—white leather, green heel tab, perforated details—are still there. But to protect your feet from the cold, the shoe comes equipped with Gore-Tex insulation. This high-tech, ultra-thin insulation only surrounds the toes, which will keep your feet noticeably warmer when you’re outdoors. (If you haven’t seen that episode of Seinfeld, Gore-Tex is the longtime company behind material technologies that are waterproof, lightweight, and breathable, yet supremely warm for harsh weather.) The best part is that since the insulation lives within the sneaker, the design looks like just like any other Stan Smith, so you won’t be walking around with two puffy coats on your feet.
The secret to white sneakers is the more beat-up they get, the cooler they look. So, you know: the more you wear your kicks, the better. Usually, you could only get away with wearing them until the temperature drops and then have to throw them into the back of your closet until spring. Now, you can wear white sneakers all fall and winter long—and your wardrobe is going to thank you for it.
