American rapper, record producer and overall style icon Pharrell Williams has been flirting with French fashion house Chanel for quite some time – and don’t get us wrong, we’ve been loving it. But this time, it’s different.
Despite partnering with Pharrell on a super exclusive shoe (that was only available at Colette boutique in Paris), as well as having the star front the iconic women’s Gabrielle bag, Chanel has never fully collaborated with the multihyphenate, or for that matter, anyone else.
Until now, that is. At the end of last month, Chanel opened its first flagship boutique in Seoul, marking another major milestone for the house. It was here, at a lavish party celebrating the brand’s 10th store in South Korea, that the much anticipated ready-to-wear and accessories capsule collection – a first in Chanel's 110-year history – with Pharrell was unveiled.
Aptly titled Chanel-Pharrell, the result is a true embodiment of two creative forces coming together and crafting something really forward-thinking. Not only does the clever double-barrelled name have a brilliant ring to it, but the items are already iconic mainstays, sure to find a comfortable spot in the historic Chanel archives.
With a rainbow palette, the gender-fluid collection (would Pharrell have it any other way?) combines the star’s street feel with signature Chanel motifs, as seen on block colour t-shirts, short and long robes, hoodies, loafers, mules and custom grafittied Chanel x Pharrell sneakers.
The accessories range from rhinestoned costume jewellery, leather belts, terry towelling bucket hats, and suede hip packs. And of course, there are the sunglasses, ranging from rectangular-shaped to round.
The Chanel-Pharrell logo, along with the artists own interpretations of house classics like CC, N°5 and Coco, are splashed throughout the collection, cementing his street style vision for the heritage house.
A standout includes a personal story by Pharrell emblazoned on a long-sleeve t-shirt, where he references a bet he had with a friend in the past, then maintaining that he’d never have the opportunity to collaborate with Chanel.
Well, here's to turning dreams into reality. A very, very chic reality.
The collection is available in select Chanel boutiques worldwide, including The Dubai Mall from April 5. In the meantime, take a look at some of the amazing fits worn at the Chanel boutique opening and capsule collection launch in Seoul.
