Dubbed the "Blueprint", it's the most expensive RM ever made

While they've long been the timepiece of choice for the world's most talked-about and glamorous athletes, Richard Mille's timepieces are finally hitting the point where they're starting to find their way onto the wrists of the world's biggest cultural heavyweights.

And while the Hip-hop game was once one where only a Rolex would do on the wrist, a new boom in fine timekeeping has seen watches from the likes of Patek, Audemars Piguet and, in this case, Richard Mille, become statement pieces completely of their own accord.

Of course, as has been evidenced with the likes of Alexander Zverev and seemingly half the F1 grid, there aren't many more desirable timepieces in the world than a custom Richard Mille, and Jay-Z's new RM, simply dubbed the Blueprint (a reference to 2001's the Blueprint, which has gone down as one of the Brooklyn rapper's seminal works.)

The first snap of the watch was shared by luxury jewelry broker Alex Todd, who's provided fine timepieces and jewelry for hip hop royalty such as Diddy and Meek Mill. The watch made its public debut on Hov's wrist when he joined his wife Beyonce on the red carpet of the NAACP awards.

"Rm Blue Sapphire Facts," writes Todd in the caption, "Takes 3000 hours just to make the case on this watch. It’s the most expensive RM ever produced.
"Piece unique non Before non to come.

"We call her the blueprint...."

While Richard Mille is yet to release any official info on the watch, an LA-based instagram account shared a close-up on the watch, which is reportedly a one of one RM056 Tourbillon split seconds chronograph. Here's the kicker: it's crafted entirely out of blue sapphire. Not sapphire glass, actual Sapphire.

"The Icon Shawn Carter also known as Jay-Z during 50th NAACP Image Awards was wearing the most expensive @richardmilleofficial ever produced, A unique RM056 Tourbillon split seconds chronograph in blue sapphire. The entire masterpiece is cut and milled from solid blocks of sapphire. The production of this sapphire structure took years of research and testing in order to ensure an adequate response to the demands of strength and comfort.

"Limited edition of 1 piece.

"Price : $ 2,500,000.00"

This isn't the first time that RM have made a watch entirely out of Sapphire — their RM56-02 also boasts a case made entirely out of the precious stone. "Although extremely tough," reads the description of the watch on their website, "sapphire does not allow for even the slightest error during milling and cutting. Creating a case of this quality took over 1,000 hours of machining, of which 430 hours were spent on pre-forming the case components and 350 hours on grinding and polishing the whole watchcase."
