You know you’ve had a good year when the fine folks at Netflix decide to make a whole documentary centered around it. Over the span of the last 12 months, the 28-year-old Travis Scott has released a number-one album, collaborated on a couple Nike sneakers that are selling for thousands on the secondary market, and gotten his own special-edition box of Reese’s Puffs. He’s marked the exceptional year like any good rich guy would: by accumulating amazing watches. Scott’s mostly worn a very frosty Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, but this week, on the red carpet before the premiere of his new Netflix documentary Look Mom I Can Fly, he showed off a super-gorgeous $396,910 Patek Philippe. Also this week: the Jonas Brothers show off their disparate tastes and Robert Downey Jr wears another watch for aliens.
Travis Scott’s Patek Philippe Celestial 6104
Scott’s Patek Philippe comes with a celestial map that is actually meant to track the phase of the stars and moon in the sky. The area in the white outlined circle is what is visible overhead for the wearer, the six-pointed star indicates Sirius (the brightest star in the night sky), and the watch also tracks the moon’s current phase and place in orbit. And because that wasn’t enough twinkle-twinkle for Travis Scott, he opted for the version with a bezel lined with diamonds.
The Jonas Brothers’ Richard Mille RM 11-01, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin, and Jacob & Co. Palatial Classic Manual Big Date
They may be related, play in a band together, and all have roughly the same haircut, but the JoBros have very different taste in watches. Nick is wearing a modern highly-technical sports watch by Richard Mille. This one was created for Italian soccer manager Roberto Mancini and designed specifically so he could time matches. Joe is wearing a very different kind of sports watch: Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak. Meanwhile, Kevin’s Jacob & Co. watch is on the opposite end of the spectrum, ditching sportiness for ultra luxury.
Chris Pratt’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Chris Pratt is wearing the watch every collector wants: the Rolex Daytona. Pratt’s edition debuted in 2016 and comes with a very cool black-and-white sorta-“Panda” dial. The Daytona is one of Rolex’s iconic models, a racing-inspired timepiece that is given to the winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona race. Actor-turned-racer Paul Newman was also a bigtime fan of the watch: you may have heard that the piece he owned sold for $17.8 million a few years ago.
Bill Skarsgård’s IWC Ingenieur Automatic
IWC originally developed the Ingenieur in 1955 with a movement resistant to magnetic fields. The brand intended for the watch to be worn by engineers and scientists toiling away in laboratories near massive units of machinery. Fittingly, it’s worn here by the mad scientist of fits – pinstripes with pinstripes! – Bill Skarsgård.
Robert Downey Jr’s Urwerk UR-110
Robert Downey Jr.’s collection of funky space-opera watches is unparalleled. His stylist Jeanne Yang recently described his style to me as: “That nod to the past, but appreciation for the future,” before reconsidering. “Maybe a nod to the future with appreciation for the past.” This watch is definitely future-gazing, especially if that future is one, thousands of years from now, when we’re all living on spaceships and waiting for phase seven of the Marvel Comic Universe to unfold.
Ice T’s Richard Mille 11-03
Ice T wore Richard Mille’s classic 11-03 model to the VMAs Monday night. Although both Pratt’s Daytona and T’s 11-03 are inspired by racecar driving – the RM dial replicates the dash of a Formula 1 car – they could not look more different. After the VMAs Monday night, someone told Twitter MVP Ice T he was dressed like, “My grandpa ordering salami at the deli counter.” Ice T responded: “He must be a PIMP...”
